Hrvatski dom Vukovar

Hrvatski dom Vukovar is one of the central venues of cultural life in the city. Its spaces host theatre performances, concerts, exhibitions, programmes for children and young people, guest productions and a wide range of cultural and community events.

The Public Institution in Culture Hrvatski dom Vukovar manages both Hrvatski dom and the Ružička House.

Our aim is to provide audiences of different generations with access to quality cultural, artistic, educational and scientific programmes, while also creating space for the development of our own productions and local cultural creativity.

More Than a Century of Cultural History

The need for a dedicated venue for cultural events in Vukovar emerged at the beginning of the 20th century. The initiative to build Hrvatski dom was launched by the Croatian Singing Society "Dunav", and the building was officially opened on 9 July 1922.

Over the decades, Hrvatski dom has been part of many different periods in Vukovar's cultural history. The historic building was severely damaged during the Croatian War of Independence.

Following extensive reconstruction, including conservation and restoration work and the restoration of the main hall to its original form, Hrvatski dom was officially reopened on 22 November 2007.

The present-day Public Institution in Culture Hrvatski dom Vukovar was established in 2008. Since then, Hrvatski dom has continued to develop its role as a venue for theatre, music, art, education and other cultural events in the city.

Programmes for Different Generations

The programme of Hrvatski dom includes guest and in-house theatre productions, concerts, exhibitions, programmes for children and young people, as well as a variety of cultural, educational and scientific activities.

Through its work, Hrvatski dom brings together professional artists, local creators, associations, schools, children, young people and audiences of different generations.

Programmes for children and young people have a particularly important place in our activities, including drama and dance programmes, creative workshops and other activities that encourage creativity, participation and the development of new audiences.

Scena Martin

Scena Martin operates as part of Hrvatski dom, bringing together professional production, amateur theatre and programmes connected with the performing arts.

Over the years, Scena Martin has developed its own productions for children and adults and has brought together professional performers and theatre enthusiasts from Vukovar.

The name Scena Martin is connected to one of the earliest historical references to performing arts in the Vukovar area. Documents dating from 1377 mention Martin, known as a performer and musician, after whom the theatre company was named.

Ružička House

Another important part of the institution is the Ružička House, the birthplace of Lavoslav Ružička, Croatia's first Nobel Prize winner.

The restored house is now a place where cultural and scientific heritage meet educational and contemporary programmes.

Through workshops, interactive activities and programmes dedicated to Lavoslav Ružička, visitors - especially children and young people - can learn more about science, his life and work, and his importance to Vukovar and Croatian scientific heritage.

While respecting its history and heritage, the institution continues to develop contemporary programmes and create opportunities for new generations of audiences and artists.
